Diastasis recti is not talked about much, and the few times it is discussed there’s some misinformation involved. Here are some FAQ’s about diastasis recti.
1: What is diastasis recti?
Diastasis recti is the separation of the abdominal muscles (rectus abdominis). It occurs to EVERYONE in the end of pregnancy.
2: Does diastasis recti cause low back pain?
Diastasis recti does not cause low back pain, but it does indicate a weak core musculature which does cause low back pain. So, when you are assessed by a PT and they check your DR, they are looking to see how well you can approximate (bring together) those separated parts. This give us an idea of how much muscle strength and control you have in your deep core. Inability to engage and control these muscles does lead to low back pain.
3: Does improving my DR help with the “mom pooch”?
I challenge you to think of it this way- improving your deep core improves your quality of life. It allows you to retain your ability to exercise, play with your kids, and age well. You had a baby in your belly, it’s ok if it looks like someone once lived there. Your goal is function, not appearance.
… But also, yeah. Maybe.
