This is a movement we can get behind! Maybe you’ve seen this hashtag floating around. Maybe you haven’t. Either way, I think it’s worth discussing.
I frequently hear “My back was hurting so I got an x-ray.” or “I hurt my shoulder, so I went and got some pain meds.” or “My knee flared up again so I got another injection.” All of these are certainly actions to take once you’re feeling a nagging ache or pain. BUT, few people know that physical therapists are more qualified to conservatively address musculoskeletal issues in a meaningful way.
Providers who use images (x-rays), pain meds, and injections as a first line are great to consult with AFTER a PT. But most issues don’t require those types of tools, and can be avoided by consulting with a PT first. If the goal is long term resolution of symptoms and safe return to activity, PT is the most effective tool. A licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy is most equipped to handle any issues from acute injury to chronic pain. Research has shown time and time again that those who seek PT first have better outcomes all around.
My hope is that the focus begins to shift from masking symptoms with passive treatments that often lead to invasive surgeries, to more active treatments that address the source of the problem. Fortunately, in Kentucky, a referral from a physician is not required to see a PT. So, all you need to do is pick up the phone and call to schedule an appointment. Holler at us with questions!
