Qualities of Great Pelvic Floor PT

Last week I went to Atlanta to attend a Physical Therapy conference. While there, I got to spend some time one-on-one with my pelvic floor mentor. She’s a fantastic PT named Gabi  from the Tampa area. We’ve met weekly via zoom for several months to talk all things pelvic floor PT. It is wonderful. Of course the knowledge that comes from these convos is really beneficial, but we thought this conference would be a good opportunity to practice some hands-on skills. What I expected was to gain insight on new treatment techniques and assessments. What I got was so much more!

I witnessed first hand the qualities of a great pelvic floor PT. Spoiler alert- a great understanding of the pelvic floor and how to treat it is just the beginning.

Gabi walked me through her full assessment and here are the things that stood out most:

  1. Gabi listened. The beginning of our time was spent with her listening intently to the answers of the questions she asked about my history, complaints, and goals. She never interrupted. She wanted to hear every word.

Your pelvic floor PT appointment is about you, your needs, and your goals and your therapist should make you feel that way.

  1. Gabi explained thoroughly  every step she was about to take before she took it.

Knowing what to expect in your appointment is a big part of making you feeling comfortable.

  1. Gabi uses her words to heal.

Your pelvic floor PT should be honest, but positive. If you are seeking a pelvic floor PT, you are likely already a little discouraged. Helping you feel empowered in your body is just as important as addressing the physical symptoms.

If you are looking for a pelvic floor PT,, the ability to treat your pelvic floor is a minimum requirement. It is important, but there’s more.

Holler at me with questions!
