I have been floored by how few people know about pelvic floor PT since I started practicing.
The ways it can improve a person’s quality of life are endless and major. Issues that so many of us are just living with can be addressed, and I’m making it my mission to tell everyone. We’re starting here, pain with sex. If this is something you’ve experienced, please know 2 things: you are not alone and there IS something we can do.
How can pelvic floor PT help with pain with sex? A few key ways. First of all, your pelvic floor PT will determine the true source (there may be several) and decide how to address it. Your pelvic floor muscles might be tight or weak or maybe they forgot how to relax. There could be some psychological ties here that a pelvic floor physical therapist can identify, and then refer you to the correct person to address that while you are working with the musculature. Whatever the cause may be, your pelvic floor physical therapist will work to identify it in an evaluation and then set you on the correct path that leads to enjoyable sex.
That path may involve bringing awareness to your pelvic floor muscles so that you are able to properly contract and relax them at appropriate times. It may include progressions of exercises to promote strength or relaxation in different positions. They will work with you hand in hand to reach the goals you are wishing to achieve.
If enjoyable sex has felt out of reach for you, I encourage you to contact your local pelvic floor physical therapist to learn more about how they may help you. You won’t regret it!
