6 Week Approval for Exercise

The postpartum time comes with a ton of adjustments and changes. Many of them are wonderful, some of them challenging. Getting back into the swing of things as you adjust to this new life is a big goal, and we look forward to that 6 week appointment for the all clear.

As I sat in the exam room 6 weeks after giving birth to my first daughter, I was so confused as I heard the words “Ok, you’re good to go. You can get back to your regular activity but take it easy. ”I love exercise, and hitting my CrossFit classes and long runs without the belly bump was something I’d dreamed of for months. But all I could think was “How? Where do I start? How do I know what’s too much or not enough? Are there moves I should avoid?” I wondered if anyone else felt the way I did

The internet is full of conflicting information and in my early years as a PT, I had a really difficult time interpreting that information.

What I needed was someone to guide me through. There’s a way to do it, there are things to watch for, and progress through it can look different for everyone. But a few visits on the front end can make all the difference in your abilities as you heal.

Here’s my advice, some I wish someone had given me: Find a pelvic floor PT. If you are wanting to get back to higher level activity like crossfit or running, a pelvic floor PT will be able to ensure you are able to do that safely and efficiently without leaking. Taking the proper steps into activity may even help you come back stronger than you were before!

Painful sex after giving is also a concern that can be addressed (not a lot of people know this!) Discussions with a PT beforehand can be so helpful!

So if you are as worried as I was about life after birth, ask me questions! We can start addressing these things as soon as 2-3 weeks after delivery through in person or telehealth appointments!
